NAVIGON U.S. West App Reviews

Great App

Very great app for navigation purposes. It helped us a lot during our vacation in California!

OK, but thats it.

We purchased the Navigon US West App for our trip to Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, and Arizona. We use Navigon Europe for our everyday navigation in Europe, so we wanted to stick to something familiar. Generally speaking, the app served us well, but there are a lot of flaws. 1 out-dated map material We specifically purchased and downloaded the app only a few days before our departure. Unfortunately, we did encounter many places where the map material was out of date. E.g.: The gas station on the junction US97/OR138 in Oregon does not exist any more - and has not, by the looks of it, for quite some time. The feeling is a bit odd, standing in the middle of nowhere with the gas low not knowing if the other gas stations in the app still exist. E.g.2.: The city of Klamath Falls, OR, does not have any Safeways supermarket any more – the app sends you to two different places in the city, but does not know the only existing WalMart there. E.g.3.: Quite a lot of minor roads were closed for the season or to public use – a fact we only found out when standing in front of the sign. By the looks of it, these roads are either permanently closed or regularly closed during summertime. This goes especially for the area South of the Lava Beds National Monument and the area of the Modoc National Forest. 2. Hardly comprehensible routing algorithm The algorithm calculating the routing seems to have a problem. In the San Francisco Bay area, instead of sending us along the freeway for a couple of miles, it would tell us to exit from the freeway at virtually each and every single exit and re-enter at that same exit – it seems the app "thinks" that the freeway does not continue over the exit. This happened on I-880 South and on other freeways in the area. 3 useless lane assistant The lane assistant is useless most of the times. It happened frequently, that it told us we could use all three or four lanes – so we sticked to the right one we were on. It then turned out 150 yds ahead of the junction that only the left lane would turn left as we had to do, so that we would have had to cross three lanes within 150 yds. 4 inconsistent announcements The "keep left"/"keep right" announcements are inconsistent. Sometimes, when you only have to change lanes, the app would advise you to "turn" left or right, whereas on other occasions, a real turn would only go with an announcement such as "keep" left or right. Sometimes, the "keep"-announcement is omitted: E.g. on the – admittedly complicated – junction of S Spokane St with Airport Road and I-5 in Seattle, WA: If you come from S Spokane St heading East and want to turn on Airport Road heading South, you come from the right side, you will first have to keep left to avoid entering I-5 South and then turn right under the bridge. In this case, the app tells you at a very early stage to "keep right on Airport Road South" and does not say anything about keeping left before that. In the traffic situation, you are forced to think that you have to take the first opportunity to your right which is wrong as this is the entrance to the I-5 South. We got along well, anyway, because (1) we had printed maps, too, and (2) we were two persons, one to correct or translate the apps announcements by comparison with the printed map and one to drive. Would I buy again? Probably yes. It may be a poor instrument, but it still helps, and we adapted to its flaws. Just dont expect an app that knows it all and keep alert yourself.

Good product

Just used this on our driving trip from Vancouver BC Canada to Disneyland California and san diego. Worked really well the complete trip. Doesnt need a data plan on. Be sure to download the maps for each state after downloading the app and be sure to use wifi for that. I also purchased the 3d terrain mapping thinking it would be great to be able to anticipate hills, but that was a waste of money.

Great navigation

Help me navigate through whole Californua. Driving through cities with out it would be a nightmare. The only thing I didnt like is that it informs about next turn approximately 2 mile before. Im used to other navigator which immidietly informs me abut next turn and just counts distance down.

Pretty laggy

I missed five exits from freeways due to the delay in announcements.

Used To Be The Best

This used to be, hands down, the best navigation app on the iPhone. Fair price, good interface design and reliable directions. But ever since Garmin bought Navigon, its been a mixed bag. Some of the user interface changes have been improvements. The menus are bold, well organized and easy to understand. The addition of Google Street view turns out to be a unnecessary distraction that you cant turn off. But, the real sin of this app is how Garmin has decided to nickel & dime Navigon users. Some features have always been extra but when I original purchased this app, maps were gauranteed up-to-date at no additional charge. Garmin has decided not to honor that agreement with legacy users and you must now "subscribe" for a feature that once was free.

Goes to sleep

After the last upgrade the app goes to sleep while Im using it. This renders it useless.

No free updates.

I bought this app before Garmin bought Navigon. And one of the hot selling points was free map updates for life. Garmin had reneged on this promise and wants $20 a year for updates.

Navigon went from a 5 Star to a 1 Star!!

Wow I cant buy the central USA maps, in the in app purchase any more now I have to buy it separately.

Bait and switch

I paid for this app and was told it would have free map updates for life. I want that back, you should be sued!

Good timing

Nice to have the update the next day after iOS 6 is out with free and better navigation.

Wont Load.....

After updating, I cant load this app! Frustrating because I loved it & used it daily for navigation. I havent updated to OS6 yet, but wish I didnt update this app. I tried reinstalling and reseting with nothing working. (4S)

Terrible

Really bad app,not worth money at all! Offline maps working terrible.

Works great on my iPhone 5

I upgraded with no problems . Works great on iPhone 5

Good Navigation app. Goofballs need not apply….

Ignore the bad reviews. This app has been nothing but rock solid for the 18 months that Ive had it. Its given me directions extremely well. So well that its to the point to where I cant give directions to anyone simply because I rely on this app entirely to get where Im going. If this app where to stop working, Id be literally lost. If there is some place I need to be at a certain time, even if I know the way, I use the app with live traffic and voice prompts muted. It will tell me of current traffic jams and route me around them insuring that I am not late. On these California freeways, stuff happens. The reason why I didnt give this app 5 stars is because when updates are available, this app bugs you until you update. If you start an update, the app will not work until they are completed. Updates are quite large and take a while, even on Wifi. Over all this app has served me well. One should avoid those navigation apps that depend on your data plan. This is not one of them. Keep up the good work.

Pathetic

This was a great app until Garmin took over, piece if junk now. Dont bother wasting your time or money!!

Great Application

Ive had this app for several years and it has never let me down. App never crashes, maps are always accurate and it works amazing on iOS 6 with the iPhone 5. If you travel in areas with little or no cell signal this is great since the maps are stored to your phone. No cell service is required for the GPS to work.

Gets Me There

I use this Navigation application with a Wi-Fi only iPad 2 using an external Bluetooth GPS (Dual 150). The built-in maps are essential without a cellular connection. Have used for primary navigation across the US. And found it quite reliable. Multiple destinations may be input. POIs are useful, as well. Address input is a bit clunky, best to do it prior to driving. Motion X is still the superior app, yet you must download all maps prior to a trip. Thats not always practical. Ive tried quite a few nav apps and Navigon is the best I have found, with included maps. Well worth the price.

Keeps losing my maps!

STAY AWAY FROM THIS! Starts with an error message that it cannot connect to the server. Keeps needing to re-download my maps every time I try to use the app. Does not work on my iPhone 5. A complete WASTE of money!
